Plant of the Month - January

Each month we feature a picture of a plant growing on The Commons. All plants featured have been photographed here. This month, we are featuring crimson Alder catkins silhouetted against the January sky on the bank side of Foxes Beck. Alder is a tree of riversides, fens and wet woods. As its roots do not rot under water it can be used for piles to shore up canalsides and riverbanks. In the past it was used in the making of clogs and providing charcoal for gunpowder.

Further information and more pictures can be found on the Woodland Trust website.
